Milan, in the footsteps of Leonardo
Leonardo da Vinci arrived in Milan in 1482, summoned by Ludovico Sforza known as the Moor. With his arrival, Milan changed its face forever. This smart trip, ideal for children, is for those who want to discover the eternal genius of Leonardo and be amazed by the indelible mark he left on the city.
Start at the Duomo, whose construction also required Leonardo's advice. Take a tour of its spires, the view from there is incomparable. Crossing Galleria Vittorio Emanuele you will find Piazza della Scala where a statue dedicated to Leonardo and his pupils stands. A nice walk will take you to the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, whose refectory houses one of the most famous paintings in the world, The Last Supper. Not far away, at Casa degli Atellani, is Leonardo's Vineyard, a gift from Ludovico il Moro to the artist. Also in the area is the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, known as the Sistine Chapel of Milan for the frescoes painted by Bernardino Luini of Leonardo's school.
The Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro hides a masterpiece of perspective by Bramante, who was also at the Sforza court with Leonardo. Not far away, the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana houses the Codex Atlanticus, the largest collection of Leonardo's drawings. A few steps and you are at the Sforza Castle where Leonardo worked on the decoration of the stupendous Sala delle Asse. The castle's masterpieces also include the Pietà Rondanini sculpted by Michelangelo. From the castle, crossing the park, you arrive in a neighborhood full of bars where you can end the day with an aperitif, a true tradition for the Milanese.
The "Leonardo da Vinci" Museum of Science and Technology is one of the largest in Italy. Here you will find important evidence of Leonardo's presence in Milan and a section showing a collection of models based on his drawings. Leaving the museum, head towards the Navigli, a system of canals that Leonardo, among the greats of his day, worked on. Here you'll also find one of the city's most picturesque corners, the Vicolo dei Lavandai and the world's smallest bar, Backdoor 43. Want to try a typical dish tonight? Order an Elephant Ear...
